"Letter of Amends from a Recovering Conservative in Columbia, South Carolina"

Dear friends, family, loved ones, Liberals, Democrats, Progressives, my brother in law, Sam, and my cousin Joe: I am sorry and you were right.

These are not easy words for anyone to utter, much less a Righty from South Carolina, or a recovering righty, that is. Even though I've been in recovery for 8 years, 3 months, 2 weeks, and 3 days, right wing-nuts are always right in your face, in an I-hate-you-if-you-disagree sort of way. Hence, this letter of amends to all the people I've lectured, scolded, called 'libtards' ranted and raved at, and otherwise annoyed during my 30 plus years of "right-wing" politics.

My recovery program urges a fierce moral inventory, a cleansing of heart and mind (kind of like a "forgiveness tour" but without the scary dictators), so here goes:

To my brother in law, Sam, for blasting you in that Chinese restaurant for voting for McGovern, mea culpa.

To my cousin Joe for calling you a traitor when you became an Book Store Owner, started holding a real job (as opposed to most of us South Carolina types who are government lobbyists, political advisors, security consultants and black water apologists), and became a progressive, my bad.

To my goddaughter whom I told when she was l0 years old that Democrats were bad, Republicans were good (yes I really did say this), and who got confused and tearful because she lives in a suburb where most people are Democrats, kid, what in the world was I thinking?

To my righty conspiracy wing-nut friends, with whom I agreed that libtards were un-American, we were wrong.

To those potential friends whom I dumped when I found out you were liberal, your gain is my loss.

To all those columnists and editors whom I harangued with angry letters and e mails, sorry, sorry, sorry.

And finally to me, Beth, for installing you for the last 27 years in the right-wing nut cult of the bible belt, where Susan Vaughan Smith of Union, SC was convicted on July 22, 1995, and sentenced to life in prison for murdering her two sons (Newt blamed it on the liberal culture). Turns out Newt was wrong and she had been molested as a child by her Republican County Chairmen stepfather.

I didn't know any better. I thought the whole world lived in areas where people spoke dirty, called people names (libtards, dam Yankee) where aggressive behavior is allowed because the perps are victims of the liberal elite, and where you can easily get cat called walking down a street or eating in a restaurant at noon. (By the way, with the righties now in charge, expect more poverty, crime, anti-union right to work laws and a lower standard of living to be coming soon to a neighborhood near you.)

Given that the media is pretty much controlled by corporate America (good luck finding a progressive book in your local "independent" book store or hearing a Liberal speak anywhere), you didn't know that a party of grownups even existed that didn't advocate screaming at others as the preferred mode of communication. So to my dear Beth, apologies for what I put you through, what I deprived you of, and my pledge to do better.

Cousin Joe, Sam, et al, you may be wondering how I did a l80 in 1 1/2 years. How did I go from a rabid, sanctimonious Righty whom you steadfastly avoided at family gatherings to a fan of Maddow, Big ED, and Keith Olbermann? Recovery encourages us to share our story, so here's mine:

In April of 2000, I saw a new client, a bright and sensitive young woman who came in looking like she just escaped a war zone. In some ways she had; she had innocently shared with others at her job that she voted for McCain rather than Bush in the 2000 South Carolina Primary. Immediately she was being targeted for abuse that put her in fear for not only her job, but her life.

We both suddenly became aware that something had grown really dark in the Republican Party. I started hearing about many other incidents where loyal Republicans were being physically and emotionally threatened for supporting McCain. A woman in Columbia had her front window broken because it displayed a poster of McCain. Karl Rove, a Bush aide, claimed McCain had fathered an illegitimate black child. (Rove was recently placed as a commentator on FOX, illustrating another disturbing trend: the deafening silence about what Olberman has dubbed the new "thug-ocracy.)

An acquaintance had her car broken into, and the only item stolen was a No Bush bumper sticker. My local greeting card store sold very flattering cards about Bush, insulting ones about McCain, and a McCain "nutcracker." When I complained, the young male manager literally laughed in my face.

Cindy McCain was called every vile name in the book by both male and female George Bush partisans.

The Conservative Republicans under the leadership of Carl Rove, by ridiculing McCain, his wife and their adopted child, were acting like arrogant snobs. The party had changed, I had changed, and the differences looked irreconcilable.

The final straw for me was when a close friend flew into a rage at me when she learned I wasn't supporting Bush. The political became personal when she began impugning my character. Worse yet, she tried to intimidate me into changing my mind by threatening to dump me.

Suddenly a light went on. The big tent of the old republican party was dead and gone (if it even existed to begin with except in my imagination). The Republicans had morphed into a power hungry Thought Police, and I was done with them. My new motto in life: don't PC on me.

So this is my letter of amends, and I hope that I can be forgiven by all whom I've offended. I knew not what the heck I was doing. But now the problem is: how in the world does one be a Liberal these days? How to stay brave and committed when Liberals are being targeted, punished, and shunned on a daily basis? How to sleep at night knowing that the country I have finally come to love may be torn apart from within by a massive Tea Party revolution?

I guess I'll just have to do a step one, as we 12 stepper's call it, and turn it all over to my Higher Power.

Love,

Beth from Columbia, South Carolina

I hardly think that extreme positions are exclusive to the "Right" - indeed any position can be abused by idealism and intolerance, be it left or right. I say this being a life long democrat and moderate liberal, but cannot tolerate extremism regardless of it's origin.

WOW!

But now the problem is: how in the world does one be a Liberal these days? How to stay brave and committed when Liberals are being targeted, punished, and shunned on a daily basis?

The same way Conservatives that aren't mean and nasty to people who don't share their views do. The problem isn't the ideology, it's the people who profess to practice the ideology. You shouldn't feel like you have to change your ideological views based on how others behave...just realize that you don't have to behave like them.

It must have been hard for you to write this, and I imagine you'll be attacked by both sides for something or other, so I'll be the one to say this: No one is perfect, we all make mistakes. Best of luck!

Perhaps it is good to review ideology led by hate and intolerance to find a new path that may not have a label.

Fantastic article. I, innocently, thought I was a Republican. I never took anything personal though so at least I never raged at anyone. 2008 brought my conversion to liberal. It just dawned on me through one horrific example after another how selfish, greedy, cruel, immoral and literally rabid crazy Republican had come to describe. It was not me. So I left. However, my family stayed on the right and their ugly behavior turned even uglier. They literally wanted to destroy me in any way, no matter how low, that they could. They wanted to destroy (and I mean destroy) me because a) I was no longer a Republican and supported Obama on Newsvine and b) because I did not like Sarah Palin. I found her without substance, a liar, lazily unintelligent or well versed and incompetent to be a VP. That was my family's war call to my demise. I did not ...gasp...double gasp...like or worship Sarah Palin. I was horrifed at the racism, bigotry and complete ugliness and completely non-Christian like behavior manifested by the right. Republican, to me. has morphed to mean everything for nepotism, greed and deception. And they never stop being just that and showing how low and despicable man can be. I find it impossible to support that type of behavior.

I'm a South Carolina conservative, I don't call myself a Republican because I usually can't tell you which candidates are what party. I vote for the issues I believe in which tend to be conservative on the fiscal side (smaller government, less spending, more actual accounting for what we do spend) and more liberally on the social side. I find the name calling happens most when discussing things that are emotionally charged ie..... gays and the military, or unions and abortion. Then it happens on both sides. People get nasty. It's not one side or the other. It's a human condition called being anonymous.

I enjoyed the article, and thanks for the offering from the "other side"!

Can't stand the thought that true Americans kicked their butts in November .

I am liberal in my political positions. I was born here, raised here, paid taxes all my working life, and always supported the government duly elected by the American people.

Tell me exactly how that makes me not a true American? That statement is assine and way immature.

The morons that voted in this empty suite

The "empty suit" you refer to basically saved America as we know it. Your, I guess "full suits," did a fine job bringing it to it's knees.

On THIS side of the political spectrum, you CAN hold independent views and not have to worry about getting shot or having your windows broken out.

I'm a Proud Progressive Liberal who believes in a strong defense and an even stronger society.

    PCman:

A single period, exclamation point, or question mark will suffice for punctuation at the end of a sentence. Using the standard rules of grammar might make interpretation of your rants a bit easier. They still won't make sense though.

Additionally, rather than use your definition of "conservative", I strongly suggest using that of Noah Webster. South Carolina is most assuredly not a conservative state. For proof, I offer two words: Jim DeMint. This man's views are definitely not conservative; delusional, uninformed, hateful, bigoted? Yes. Conservative? No.

Beth - Welcome aboard. Regardless of what the "conservatives" believe, an open mind and respect for education are good things.

Sadly, it seems as if all you have to do to win an argument is to speak louder and faster. This is the dilemma i face when talking politics with conservative friends. It does not matter how many facts i use, they just cut me off and repeat the same garbage they heard on fox news.

Prime example, last week i was at my friends house. It was me(raging liberal), my cousin(moderate democrat), and my two friends (rightwingnuts, but i still love em). They brought up the $200 million a day trip Obama was taking to India. I notified them that number came from an Indian official and that is not correct because they do not disclose that information for security purposes.

They just kept saying, "it was on fox". I kept saying, "then you should know it was bull". It is hard to have conversations with people who do not believe facts, but will believe the talking heads on fox news. I don't care if you are liberal, socialist, communist, conservative, stalinist, moderate, does not matter, all i care is that others are willing to have constructive conversation.

I often get very frustrated on the vine when posting on conservative seeds. I do not personally attack people, maybe their party, but not directly. It is hard for me to get simple answers out of people. I had one conservative who could/would not answer this question: "is the growing gap between rich and poor good for our society"? Of course, she defended ceo's and paid no attention to the "little guys" making the ceo's all that money.

Please, i beg everyone on the vine to engage in constructive conversation, not petty arguments.

Greg, I give you a lot of credit. I gave up long ago trying to have an intelligent conversation with rabid conservatives (the responses from silvrhawk and PCMan illustrate this point beautifully). I also have friends and family members who are conservative but, for the sake of our relationships, we never, ever discuss politics. These nice, otherwise friendly people literally turn into monsters when the discussion turns political. They become completely irrational and are incapable of expressing a thought that doesn't come straight from Fox News talking points. I figure it's best to let this sleeping dog lie and hopefully someday they will see the light on their own. Nothing I say is going to make a difference.

The last time my sister tried to have an intelligent conversation with my right wing mother, she was disowned. That was when Clinton was president, and my mother hasn't spoken to my sister since. Lesson learned-I don't discuss politics with my mother.

I do think I owe everyone an apology here. This letter was pure sarcasm and I did not intend to mislead or "fool" anyone. I saw a similar "made up" letter on a righty blog and switched the references (thats all).

The point here is that the right is obsessed with demonizing progressives. We are libtards, socialists, communist, America haters, etc, etc.

I for one am a patriotic, American loving progressive who only wants what is best for my country. I am not a socialist or a communist and am sick of being called one. As a matter of fact, I am a capitalist who believes the only way capitalism can be successful is with a modicum of government oversight.

Anyway, here is a link to the original article that got me all steamed up in the first place:
